What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin, commonly called “botox”, is a manufactured injectable medication used to therapeutically reduce the strength of targeted muscles. Hyperactive muscles can cause undesirable skin wrinkles and even pain from excessive tension. Botox is administered in very small doses to help relax the muscle. Botox has been profoundly studied and has been proven safe and effective. Botox treatment is quickly becoming one of the most popular procedures in the therapeutic and cosmetic sectors. Dr. Stapleton at MDRN Dental in West Houston is proud to be one of the only dentists in Texas that is certified to administer botox.

How does Botox help improve the look of wrinkles?

Most Wrinkle lines on the face are caused to a large degree by the repetitive creasing and folding of the skin by the underlying muscle. These lines are known as “dynamic” wrinkles or “wrinkles in motion.” As we age, the muscles used in facial expression become hyperdynamic as result of habit, leading to undesirable wrinkles. By administering botox, and relaxing selected muscles, we are able to allow the skin to “recover”. This rapidly improves the appearance of the wrinkles creating smooth, healthy looking skin. Prevention is Better Than Cure!

The best way to cure a wrinkle is to prevent it from forming in the first place! Botox is the best way to prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming. Dynamic wrinkles of the face can start forming as early as our 20s! Once a wrinkle line is formed, it is very hard to remove it entirely, that is why prevention is the best cure and nothing is better for prevention than botox treatments. Routinely administered botox treatments will prevent wrinkle lines from forming due to dynamic movements of facial muscles.

Which wrinkle areas does Botox help treat?

The primary treatment area of facial wrinkling and facial pain associated with hyperdynamic muscle movement include:

  • Glabellar / Frown Lines (Between the Eyebrows)
  • Horizontal Forehead Lines
  • Crow’s Feet (Outer Eye area)
  • Radial Lip Lines (Smoker or Water Bottle Lines)

How long does Botox last?

Once Botox is administered, the effects will typically last around 3-4 months. As the effects wear off, the strength slowly returns to the muscle. Additional botox may be administered at this time to relax the muscles once again. Cumulative effect of long term, regular use of botox obtains the best results!
