What is filler?

Dermal filler is an injectable soft tissue filler that helps fill in wrinkle lines and restore lost volume from aging. Dermal filler can also be used to enhance and sculpt certain body parts such as lips. There are several types of dermal filler that can be used, depending on the volume and lift wanted. Dr. Stapleton typically uses a dermal filer such as Juvederm^® or Restylane^®, which is made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your body.

How does dermal filler help reverse the signs of aging?

As we age past our early twenties, we lose about 1% of our dermal collagen per year, especially over the age of 50. This leads to a loss in volume in certain areas of the face which creates a more “aged” appearance. Thinning of the lips, reduced cheek volume, and more noticeable bony features are all signs of reduced facial volume due to aging. With less volume, our skin begins fold over itself which can “static” wrinkles (not to be confused with “drynamic” wrinkles which can be reduced with botox). Dermal filler can be injected into the soft tissue to create more volume which will create a more youthful, vibrant appearance!

What wrinkles can be treated with dermal filler?

“Static” wrinkle lines on the face are caused by loss of volume. Dermal filler injections are a non-surgical way to improve the appearance of these static wrinkle lines. Common wrinkles treated by dermal filler include:

• Nasolabial folds (Smile Lines)
• Oral Commissures (Downturned corners of the mouth)
• Marionette Lines

How long does filler last?

The most common dermal fillers used, such as Juvederm ® and Restylane ®, will typically last about 6-12 months. As your body metabolizes the filler and the volume starts to decrease, more filler may be added. The cumulative effect of long term, regular use of filler provides the best results!
